Psychedelics in Africa: The Untold Story Series 1

Welcome to the Darren Le Baron webinar series Psychedelics in Africa: The Untold Story

It is being suggested that we are experiencing the psychedelic renaissance; it’s the third wave, a new wave of research that puts psychedelics forward as a strong candidate for treating mental health. The recent medical trials have produced some ground-breaking results. Although I can see, and have experienced the benefits of psychedelics and their offering, I have always asked… who will reap the benefits?

At the very beginning of my research journey looking into psychedelics in Africa, from the initial Google searches to the local events and conferences I was attending there was a narrative and that was “we don’t know much about Africa, or there’s not much going on in Africa or they have got ONE, Its Iboga… and it’s good for heroin addiction”.

Again although I can truly see the therapeutic potential of Iboga this just didn’t sit well with my spirit. I asked whether there were heroin addicts in Gabon where they said Iboga was from, and if not, what do the people who Iboga was gifted to; those who are the gatekeepers of this technology have to say about it? These unanswered questions along with reconnecting with Baba Kilindi Iyi and his works were all the inspiration needed to start undertaking this research which has now become my offering.

It is now time for the Lion to tell his own story, the hunters version is biased. So let me ask you...

Are you interested in how psychedelics have been used for tens of thousands of years on the African continent, and how they continue to support societies today?

Although not often recognized by researchers and scientists, fungi and plants have been used by the earliest indigenous people of Africa for spiritual and community development for millennia. Several communities still use these sacred plants in their rites of passage, initiation ceremonies and daily rituals. In this series, you will learn about these groups, their connection to these technologies and their various applications. Darren Le Baron will share this knowledge and experience through the lenses of ancient history, mythology and scientific research.
